Working in partnership
Partnership with parents and carers
Creating a culture of partnership
The size and circumstances of secondary schools can make it more difficult to develop and maintain the personal links between parent and carers and school which occur at primary level. However, secondary schools are becoming more successful at involving families and developing stronger relationships with them. Many schools have worked hard at this and have come up with creative solutions.
Examples of good practice involving parents, carers, children and young people in school:
- Parent and carer working group
- SEND forum coffee mornings
- SEND open evenings
- Person-centred reviews
- Share/inspire sessions
- Sharing/celebration assemblies
- Community events
- Volunteering opportunities
- Using technology to enhance regular communication home
- Named staff and governors lead on parental participation in school
- Sending out advice on supporting home learning and homework
- Remote consultations and feedback
- Working closely with community support workers
